Frequently Asked Questions

   WHAT IS A BIRTHING CENTER?

A birthing center is a medical facility designed to feel like home where pregnant women can have their babies in a family-oriented environment.  At Sagua Mañagu, we view childbirth as a family event rather than a medical condition that requires a hospital stay.

   IS IT SAFE?

Yes. In a national study published in the New England Journal of Medicine comparing 11,814 women admitted to birthing centers in the U.S. to similar low risk patients admitted to hospitals, no difference in the outcomes for moms and babies were noted.  In fact, fewer c-sections were performed in moms admitted to birthing centers without compromising the safety of their infants.

HOW DO I QUALIFY TO USE THE BIRTHING CENTER?

Healthy women with low risk pregnancies are qualified to use the center.  All pregnant women must have prenatal care, be screened by their doctor, register at Sagua Mañagu and attend an orientation class before delivery.

CAN MY DOCTOR DELIVER MY BABY AT THE BIRTHING CENTER?

YES, if he or she works at Mariana’s Physicians Group.

As of November 2014, Sagua Mañagu has been reserved exclusively for MPG patients. If you wish to delivery at Sagua Mañagu, please call MPG (Marianas Physicians Group) at 647-1830 to transfer your care to the clinic.

WILL MY HEALTH INSURANCE COVER MY DELIVERY AT THE BIRTHING CENTER?

YES.  Sagua Mañagu accepts all major insurance plans: Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Calvo’s SelectCare, Cigna, Netcare, Nanbo, Takecare, Staywell, Tricare, Medicaid and MIP.

The patient’s co-payment or deductible varies from plan to plan.  Be sure to contact your healthcare provider or Sagua Mañagu’s Patient Affairs Office at 647-1415 for more information.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE INSURANCE?

You may still deliver at the birthing center, and pay the fees yourself.  Most major credit cards are accepted.  Or if you’d like to discuss other payment options, you may contact our Patient Affairs office at 647-1415.  We’ll be happy to help.

Sagua Mañagu’s package rate is significantly less than the cost of a hospital delivery.  The package includes the orientation class as well as routine labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn care.  Your doctor’s fees and additional services are billed separately.

DOES SAGUA MAÑAGU OFFER PAIN MEDICINE?

Yes, if you choose to use pain medicine while you are in labor, Sagua Mañagu offers the same pain medicine that is available at the hospital. In addition, the bathtub in each room provides a great deal of relief to mothers in labor. Our skilled birthing assistants are trained to help mothers and their partners change position and try different techniques to alleviate pain in labor.

I AM EXPECTING MY FIRST BABY. IS SAGUA MAÑAGU RIGHT FOR ME?

Many first time Moms choose Sagua Mañagu and are happy they did. Unless you have a medical condition that makes your pregnancy high-risk, you can deliver at Sagua Mañagu too. Our patients benefit from the one-on-one breastfeeding support and postpartum care. In addition, you control your visitors. If having your mother, sister, best friend, or all of the above present to help you during labor and birth is helpful, we welcome them all. Our Lamaze classes are especially helpful to first time parents. We also offer breastfeeding and postpartum support group sessions for parents after baby goes home. Our patients can call the nurses at Sagua Mañagu any day or night so you’re never alone.

WHAT FOLLOW-UP CARE SERVICES CAN I EXPECT FROM SAGUA MAÑAGU?

Normally after discharge, one of the nurses at Sagua Mañagu will call you within the first couple of days at home. We try to make follow up phone calls at 24 hours and again at 3 days after discharge. We’ll discuss how you and baby are doing and go over any concerns or questions you may have. We’ll arrange further follow up as needed if we feel it’s necessary.

Your OB doctor or midwife will let you know when to make appointments for your postpartum visit before discharge, and your pediatrician will let you know when to make an appointment for baby.

Breastfeeding support is offered by Barbara Mafnas our Lactation Consultant. She has twice weekly support groups here at Sagua Mañagu and can also organize one-on-one consultations as necessary for breastfeeding issues.
